About the Pier

Posted: July 23, 2009, 8:13 AM
The Pier is an iconic landmark that serves as a focal point for our unique downtown waterfront. Yet, a subsidy costing citizens $2 million a year at a time when we need resources to fight crime is unacceptable. Construction costs will never be lower than in the next couple of years or two and renovating will be far more costly than building a new, green-certified facility.

The public has clearly expressed their desire for an architecturally significant building and there is nothing to compare with viewing St. Petersburg's stunning skyline while enjoying a drink and a bite at the Pier. However, the existing building does not work and has simply outlived its lifespan.

The Pier visioning committee needs some time to do its job and come up with the next version of this important asset to our city. Paris has the Eiffel Tower, New York has the Statue of Liberty and, under my watch, St. Petersburg will have its subsidy free and iconic Pier for tourists and locals alike.
