As CEO of Scott Paint, Scott Wagman began the first profitable paint recycling program in the state of Florida. As mayor of St. Petersburg, he wants to make curbside recycling a priority.

I don't believe it is something that should be offered by the city because it has to be paid for in some way by higher taxes or taken out of the budget somewhere. Everyone knows it costs money to recycle. Being green is great but being green does not pay for iteself. It is impossible for one family to generate enough aluminum or paper to pay for the pickup service. How is this going to be paid for?
Posted by: Lisa, Cresent Heights | August 05, 2009 After living in Yellowstone National Park I learned a great deal about being green, we had to take all our garbage to the dump where recycling bins were right beside the garbage bins. I kept the habit and still separate my garbage and take it to the recycling bins at the park. Curbside is great as long as it doesn’t raise my taxes! Let’s face it, we are lazy! If we do not reduce our taxes and insurance costs in St. Pete. no one will be able to live here to produce garbage.

Posted by: Marshall, Northeast Park | August 04, 2009 I believe that recycling is a great idea. My company recycles paper & cardboard. I also agree with a few others here that our garbage collection is a model for the rest of the country and shouldn't be disturbed. As a matter of fact, many communities have "borrowed" our concept and many others would love to have one man, one truck...with a comparative low cost. I lived in NYC. They have at least two men per truck which is what will be needed to have door to door recycling. How do we pay for that?
Posted by: Sandra Rinaldi, Remsen Heights | August 04, 2009 You keep coming up with more reasons for me to vote for you! I feel guilty for not recycling, but it's been just too much trouble to pack it up and haul it somewhere to drop it off. With the ease of curbside recycling, I can finally do right by the environment.
Posted by: Rachel, Northeast | August 03, 2009 When I moved to Florida 6+ years ago, I was surprised to find that St. Petersburg does not have a curbside recycling program. My small hometown in Wisconsin implemented a curbside recycling program 15-20 years ago! I think that it's about time that St. Petersburg join the green movement and start their own curbside recycling program. I'm glad that you, Scott Wagman, support it, and it's one of the many reasons that I'm supporting you as the next Mayor of St. Petersburg!

Posted by: john guth, Allendale | August 03, 2009 I had considered voting for you, but with your stand on curbside recycling I will not. St.Petersburg has one of the most efficient garbage pickup system in the USA, we do not need to create messes by having all kinds of additional containers at curbside during pick-up day. Just look at what Pinellas Park looks like on that day. Our incinerator is doing a great job, metals are salvaged there, and energy is created and sold to the elctric companies.I also do not like your stand regarding the Pier
